Buck Clayton Legacy Band with Alyn Shipton
Alyn Shipton returns with his specially assembled 'Buck Clayton Legacy Band' featuring the original 2004 line up.
The Music
The music is built on a selection of Buck’s music bequeathed personally to Alyn Shipton and has been performed at many concerts and festivals including Breda, Holland; Oberhaching, Germany; Bielska-Biala, Poland; Bulach and Thalwil in Switzerland, and in the UK: Upton-On-Severn, Gateshead, the EFG London Jazz Festival, Swansea and the Bristol Jazz Festival.
Buck Clayton (1911-1991) was an American jazz trumpeter, a member of Count Basie's orchestra. Clayton prepared arrangements for Count Basie, Benny Goodman and Harry James working also with Coleman Hawkins and Charlie Parker.
The Band
After Clayton died in 1991, he left a box of unpublished music to Alyn Shipton, which led to the creation in 2004 of the Buck Clayton Legacy Band. Recently the band has explored the small group repertoire of Duke Ellington and Johnny Hodges, as it might have been played by a Buck Clayton octet. Re-forming after the pandemic, the band played this programme at Phyllis Court, Henley, in early 2023.

Menno Daams (from Amsterdam), Ian Smith trumpets; Adrian Fry, trombone; Matthias Seuffert (from Germany) and Alan Barnes, reeds; Martin Litton, piano, Bobby Worth, drums and Alyn Shipton on the bass.
